První profesionální organizace pro autory thrillerů zvaná International Thriller Writers, Inc. zkráceně ITW, byla založena v roce 2004.
První oficiální setkání proběhlo při konferenci Bouchercon v Torontu (Kanada) v řijnu a o šest měsíců později založilo 150 autorů organizaci.
Prvními prezidenty byli Gayle Lynds a David Morrell.
První antologii všech původních autorů nazvanou Thriller editoval James Patterson, vyšla v červnu 2006 a česky ji pod stejným názvem vydal v listopadu 2007 BB art.
Každým rokem, obvykle v červenci, se koná festival zvaný ThrillerFest určený pro čtenáře, fanoušky, spisovatele, nakladatele, novináře a ostatní z branže, kde jsou vyhlašovány ceny ITW.
Cena The Silver Bullet byla vytvořena organizací ITW ve spolupráci s Mezinárodní Thriller Writers ve spojení organizací Reading Is Fundamental (RIF, Čtení je základ) jako uznání za vynikající a záslužné přispění ve snaze o zlepšení gramotnosti a lásky ke čtení.
